Africa, the birthplace of the human race, is a land of great diversity - lush, green forests, grassy plains, barren deserts, tall mountains, mighty rivers, small villages and sprawling cities. Over time many cultures and states have risen and fallen in Africa, leaving their own imprint on the continent, undiminished by the influence of 19th-century European colonialists.
