Whilst Pharaoh is a title most commonly associated with Egypt, the Valley of the Kings is no misnomer since the pharaohs were also kings; pharaoh being a title specific to the Pharaonic period. After Cleopatra lost the title to the Romans, subsequent rulers were styled emperors, caliphs and emirs, sultans and khedives. The title of King was re-introduced in 1922 by the then Sultan Fuad and inherited by his son, Farouk, in 1936.

The earlier kings focused on the construction of their final resting places – firstly in pyramids then, on realising these attracted unwanted attention, in the lavishly decorated tombs in the Valley of the Kings. Their 20th-century counterparts were more interested in personal comfort and have bequeathed a legacy of palaces and steamships for the discerning traveller wishing to explore the heritage of Egypt in some style.

Exclusive VJV Event - Luxor Temple Reception

Those who rediscovered ancient Egypt in the 18th and 19th centuries enjoyed magical overnight stays and this has prompted us to arrange private evening access to the Luxor Temple, enhanced by striking illumination, to savour the unique night-time atmosphere. A private reception has been arranged at the temple exclusively for the guests of Voyages Jules Verne. Enjoy a cocktail served by staff in pharaonic uniform at the illuminated Luxor Temple before strolling through the temple unimpeded by other visitors. A recording of Verdi’s Aida, once staged in the temple, will provide a musical background to the occasion and local musicians will play the Egyptian ‘takht’ music.
