The temples of Abu Simbel are arguably the most remarkable of all Nubian antiquities. They were discovered in the early 19th century after being buried for centuries under a sea of sand in the 1960’s, as the waters of Lake Nasser threatened to engulf them, a 5-year UNESCO project cut them from the mountain relocating them to an artificial cliff high above their original position.  The optional excursion departs in the early hours and aims to watch the sunrise at the temples of Abu Simbel.  Please note this excursion is only available from Nov on the Cairo & the Nile itinerary.
