Mexico’s Colonial Heartland

Mexico City, ancient Aztec capital Teotihuacan, colonial cities Morelia, Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende and a stay in Cortés’ former hacienda

 
 

Day 1 Fly direct from London Heathrow to Mexico City and transfer to the 3-star Hotel Metropol for a two-night stay.

Day 2 A city tour includes the national palace, with its stunning murals by Diego Rivera, the central square or “Zocalo” and the metropolitan cathedral. Continue to Teotihuacan and the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon.

Day 3 Visit the anthropology museum, housing the largest collection of ancient Mexican artefacts. Travel to Morelia for two nights at the 3-star Best Western Hotel El Casino.

Day 4 Visit Uruapan and the Eduardo Ruiz ecological park, a beautiful natural environment encompassing the Cupatitzio River and many waterfalls. Continue to the colonial town of Patzcuaro, in an elevated position and home to Lake Patzcuaro, believed in ancient folklore to be the place where the barrier between life and death is weakest.

Day 5 Depart for San Miguel de Allende for a tour including the main square and its pink granite church. Two nights at the 3-star Hotel Best Western Monteverde.

Day 6 A full-day excursion to Guanajuato to discover this silvermining city with its underground tunnels and fine architecture.

Day 7 Travel to San Juan del Rio for overnight at the four-star Hacienda Galindo, once a working hacienda owned by Spanish conqueror Cortés. Retaining its original architectural style and surrounded by lush gardens, facilities include a pool, restaurant and bar.

Day 8 Return to Mexico City, visiting the archaeological ruins of Tula enroute. Transfer to the airport for the overnight flight to London Heathrow.

Day 9
Arrive in Heathrow.
