Dubrovnik is a medieval gem of a city, and with its intact fortified walls, has changed little over the centuries. Believed to have been founded by the Romans in the 7th century it was in time under the protection of the Byzantine Empire, the Venetians, Hungarians and Ottomans and absorbing the influences of all. Through the centuries this has been the most important economic and cultural centre in the area; a city monument surrounded by stone walls, museums, galleries, treasuries, churches and fine palaces. Despite the damage inflicted during the civil war in the early 1990’s prompt action by UNESCO and the European Commission led to successful reconstruction of the city and the regaining of its former splendour. Montenegro, just an hour’s drive from Dubrovnik, is one of Europe’s new independent nations (with the second tallest people in the world!). Cetinje is the old capital and walled Kotor is dominated by dramatic cliffs and a castle.
