In the tradition of our popular water-based city visits, we have secured a comfortable cruise vessel with a central mooring for a fifth time, visiting this enchanting city during its most fortunate season, the springtime. The 17th century was the ‘Golden Age’ of the Netherlands when great canals were built and art and architecture flourished as never before. The great wealth created by their trading the Indonesian archipelago and the New World was the foundation of a great fine art heritage. One of their great seafaring towns was Hoorn where patrician houses from the Golden Age still survive. Enkhuizen is a fishing village where the open-air Zuiderzee museum contains over 100 historic buildings including shops, houses, kilns, windmills and apothecary. Some of the finest paintings of the Golden Age are housed at The Hague in the Mauritshuis, whose unrivalled Vermeer collection includes the ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’, whilst the town of Delft and its pottery is a living reminder of the 17th-century Golden Age.
