The increased interest in viewing the Northern Lights following the BBC programme featuring Joanna Lumley, continues to grow and demand for flights to Arctic Norway has outstripped supply in the last two winters. We have therefore secured seats on a direct charter flight to the Arctic capital of Tromsø during the best season (January/February) for seeing the Northern Lights or ‘Aurora Borealis’ (‘no pencil can draw it, no colours can paint it, and no words can describe it in all its magnificence’).
This dramatic Arctic cruise through snowy Norwegian landscapes and seascapes to small, colourful ports evocatively heads north from Tromsø, the same point as Amundsen’s and Nansen’s polar expeditions.
When gazing from the North Cape, Europe’s most northerly point, over the sea towards the North Pole, one’s thoughts may turn to the English explorer, Richard Chancellor who named it, or to the sinking of the Scharnhorst and Russian convoys in World War II (indeed the cruise calls at Kirkenes, just a few miles from the Russian border).
