Grand Tour of Indo-China

A classic itinerary including Angkor Wat & the Mekong River

 
 

Day 1 Fly overnight from London Heathrow via Kuala Lumpur to Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 2
Transfer to the 4-star Park Royal Hotel for three nights.
Day 3
Travel to Cu Chi to visit the underground tunnel network. A city tour of Ho Chi Minh City includes the Reunification Palace and Notre Dame Cathedral.

Day 4
A scenic drive through the Mekong Delta includes a cruise on the Tien River, Vinh Trang pagoda and lunch at a local restaurant.

Day 5
Fly to Danang and transfer to Hoi An for a two-night stay at the 4-star Pacific Hotel. An afternoon walking tour visits merchants’ houses and the 400-year-old Japanese Covered Bridge.

Day 6
Visit the My Son ruins of the Champa Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and take a sunset cruise on the Thu Bon River.

Day 7
Travel to Hue, the ancient capital of Vietnam, for overnight at the 3-star Huong Giang Hotel. Visit the Imperial Citadel and the elaborate tombs of the Emperors Tu Duc and Khai Dinh.

Day 8
Cruise on the Perfume River to visit Thien Mu Pagoda. Afternoon flight to Hanoi and transfer to Haiphong for overnight at the 4-star Harbour View Hotel.

Day 9
Drive to Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site, for an extended cruise and seafood lunch. Return to Hanoi for a two-night stay at the 5-star Hotel Melia Hanoi. Evening water puppet show, a special Vietnamese art form.

Day 10
Tour the city including the One Pillar Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh’s home and Mausoleum, Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem Lake and Old Quarter.

Day 11 A short flight brings us to Luang Prabang. Transfer to the 4-star Villa Santi Resort for two nights.

Day 12 A cruise on the Mekong River, visiting Ban Shang Hai and the Pak Ou Caves, home to thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues. Following a picnic lunch visit the weaving village of Ban Xang Khong.

Day 13 Visit Luang Prabang market followed by the temple of Vat Xieng Thong and a walk through the old city before flying to Vientiane for two nights at the 4-star Don Chan Palace.

Day 14 A city tour takes in Wat Sisaket with its thousands of miniature Buddha statues, Wat Prakeo, Wat Simuang, That Luang monument and Vientiane’s own Arc de Triomphe, the Anousavari.

Day 15 Fly to Siem Reap in Cambodia for a three night stay at the 3-star Lotus Angkor Hotel (4-star Khemara Angkor Hotel from May 2009).

Day 16
Explore the fabled temples of Angkor, the ancient capital of the Khmer empire. Temples visited include the magnificent 12th-century Angkor Wat, the South Gate of Angkor Thom, Banyon, the Elephant Terrace. Enjoy the sunset view at Phnom Bakheng.

Day 17 Further visits include the Temples of Banteay and Srei Ta Prohm and the Elephant Terrace. Afternoon boat trip on Tonle Sap Lake.

Day 18 Fly to Kuala Lumpur and onwards to London.

Day 19 Arrive Heathrow in the early morning.
