One of India’s most famous railway experiences, the Palace on Wheel, aims to recreate the ambience once enjoyed by India’s Maharajas during journeys both within and beyond their kingdoms. Its original rolling stock, now sadly beyond repair, comprised the private carriages of the Maharajas themselves. Nonetheless today’s carriages are decorated according to the same aesthetic and utilise many of the original materials and designs. Service standards too are totally authentic with a host of traditionally clad “Khidmatgars” or attendants available to cater for every need. Passengers are formally received at all the stations along the route and accorded the courtesies of visiting VIPs. Rajasthani, Indian and international cuisine is served in the restaurant cars and meals included during sightseeing excursions are taken in regal settings. Each of the train’s rake of 14 saloon cars contains four comfortable sleeping compartments (with en-suite facilities) and a small lounge. In addition, two restaurant cars, a bar and a lounge car are also attached. Voyages Jules Verne has negotiated special rates on this very popular arrangement, together with an early booking offer of £100.
