7 nights from £628
This arrangement ‘highlights’ the contrasting indigo coloured waters of the Red Sea and at the lowest point on earth ‘the great salt lake’ that is the Dead Sea with the stupendous natural landscapes of Wadi Rum and the Nabataean heritage hidden in the ‘rose-red’ city of Petra. It also allows for ancient biblical and historical sites to be easily visited in just one week with the choice of standard or upgraded accommodation en route and some time at leisure.
On the northern tip of the gulf of the same name the port of Aqaba is surrounded by rugged purplish mountains where the temperature hovers, in the winter months steadily around 20°C with a water temperature of around 23°C. Further inland lies Wadi Rum, a dramatic desert and mountain landscape and seen by many in the film ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ which is visited prior to a stay in the ancient Nabataean city of Petra, immortalised in the words of Dean Burgen as a ‘rose-red city, half as old as time’. A stay on the shores of the uniquely desolate Dead Sea concludes the itinerary and allows ample time to enjoy its curative waters as well as enabling a visit to the jewel among the Roman’s Decapolis cities at Jerash, known as ‘Pompeii of the East’ and the best-preserved Roman city of the Decapolis, a confederation or grouping of ten cities mentioned in the New Testament and dating from the first century.
