Treasures of Ecuador

Combining a luxury cruise with stays in the Andes and in the Amazon

17 nights from £3375

Before Charles Darwin’s study of the wildlife in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador’s main claim to fame was the geographical peculiarity of the equator running through its heart and from which it took its name. Early 19th-century explorers all reported a land rich in fantastic animals, ice-capped volcanoes and impenetrable Amazonian jungles but few visitors followed in their footsteps. Even today, many people are unaware of the sheer diversity that mainland Ecuador has to offer. The following itinerary explores many aspects of this fascinating country, its colonial history, an adventure at the edge of the Amazon and of course the Galapagos Islands themselves. We have been fortunate enough to secure week-long passages aboard the very finest vessel in the region, the MV Galapagos Explorer II.

During our two-day visit to the Ecuadorian Andes we view dramatic mountains, limpid lakes and cascading waterfalls, rivers and streams. We also visit a number of colourful Qichua Indian markets. The final element of this most comprehensive arrangement is a three-night stay in the Ecuadorian Amazon at the Casa del Suizo Nature Lodge where participants are invited to select from a daily menu of options including boat rides, walks and lectures. Facilities include a swimming pool, indoor and outdoor restaurants and a choice of bars.
