From the Amazon to Machu Picchu
A cruise of exploration on the rivers of the Amazon combined with a tour of Peru's Inca heritage
Day 1 Fly from London Heathrow via Miami or Madrid to Lima and transfer to the 4-star Hotel Jose Antonio for a two-night stay.
Day 2 A morning at leisure is followed by a tour of colonial Lima including visits to the Plaza de Armas and the San Francisco Convent.
Day 3 Fly to the Amazonian city of Iquitos and embark on the ‘La Turquesa’ river cruiser.
Day 4 Cruise the Amazon to its junction with the Maranon and Ucayali Rivers and taking the Ucayali River enter the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. Tributaries of the river are explored in small excursion boats and there is a high probability of spotting Amazon River dolphins which often follow vessels in this area.
Day 5 A picnic breakfast on the river and an exploration of the tributary streams of black water in search of the wild animal life and exotic birds. After dinner a nocturnal excursion gives an opportunity to experience the night-time ambience of the river.
Day 6 Arrive at the Sapote River, a place of abundant biodiversity. In a single excursion you will see hundreds of species of birds, primates and spectacular butterflies. A jungle hike visits the majestic Ceiba Kapol tree, the kings of the forest. Afternoon sailing down stream through the Ucayali River.
Day 7 Morning visit to a riverbank village and afternoon excursion in search of gigantic aquatic plants. En route a shaman will explain traditional natural remedies and the medicinal uses of plants.
Day 8 Morning bird watching walk includes a stroll along a suspended forest canopy walkway. Continue
in native canoes to a secluded lake home to a variety of fish and water creatures.
Day 9 Return to Iquitos and transfer to the airport for the return flight to Lima and an overnight stay at the Hotel Jose Antonio.
Day 10 Fly to Cuzco and transfer to the 4-star Hotel Casa Andina for a two-night stay. An afternoon tour takes in the historic centre of Cuzco and the Inca sites of Sacsayhuaman, Tambo Machay, Kenko and Puca Pucara.
Day 11 A full day tour visits Pisac Indian Market and the Inca settlement of Ollantaytambo.
Day 12 Travel by train and coach to Machu Picchu and spend the afternoon exploring the site before transferring to the 3-star Hotel Hatuchay Towers for an overnight stay.
Day 13 A morning at leisure allows ample time for a second optional visit to Machu Picchu prior to a mid-afternoon return by train to Cuzco for a further night at the Hotel Casa Andina.
Day 14 Return to Lima for an afternoon at leisure and a final night at the Hotel Jose Antonio.
Day 15 Fly via Miami or Madrid and connect with the overnight flight to London.
Day 16 Arrive Heathrow in the morning.
