Travelling in Egypt

General Notes

  • Early morning starts are often made to excursions thereby avoiding the main crowds at the sites and the intensity of the midday sun.

  • Mobility – our tours involve much walking especially at ancient sites, frequently over uneven terrain, so a degree of fitness and mobility is essential. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are able to keep up with the group and its activities.

  • During the month of Ramadan, commencing on 10/11th August and finishes on 9th September (in 2011 Ramadan commences on 1st August and finishes on 30th August), there may be restrictions on alcohol consumption, restaurant facilities and entertainment although cruising arrangements are largely unaffected.

  • Tipping is a way of life in Egypt and everyone you meet who provides any kind of a service is likely to ask for a tip or ‘baksheesh’. Further guidance will be given before travel.

Cruising on the Nile

  • There are a considerable number of boats on the Nile and delays can occur causing some sailing after dark.

  • When mooring this may be alongside other vessels with engines/generators running. Views from windows can be obstructed and access to your own boat has to be made through other vessels’ lobbies and across gangplanks. Some access points ashore involve steep steps.

  • Low water levels on the Nile (which can occur without warning) may occasionally affect itineraries.

  • In Luxor the local authorities are introducing regulations to move boats’ moorings away from the town centre and it is therefore possible that for Luxor your Nile cruiser will be berthed outside the town.
